What's it like living in a University College?

Please note change of date from Monday 10th Feb to Wednesday 12th.

St Paul's is the oldest university residential College in Australia. Modeled on the Colleges of Oxford & Cambridge and located within the grounds of Sydney University, it is now fully co-educational and houses some 400 undergraduates and Post Graduates. Past residents include 2 Prime Ministers, 2 High Court Judges and 39 Rhodes Scholars.

The College has its own Act of Parliament and although most residents are studying at Sydney University the College has its own system of in-house tutorials which supplement University tuition.

We will meet outside the reception building ( 200m in from City Rd) and be guided through the College grounds and buildings by the Director of Community Engagement who will describe its history and chronicle the development of its facilities include an Oval, Chapel, Gym, Theatre, Bar/Coffee shop, Cellar, Library, performance and rehearsal rooms.

The Edmund Blacket designed original Gothic style building is of historical interest (the Dining Hall was included in Architectural Digest's 15  best University Dining Halls in the World). The recently completed additional wings are modern and provide a spectacular view of the university and City buildings from a rooftop Bar.

Limited parking is available. Buses run from the CBD along City Road but taxis, Uber or car pooling should be considered as an alternative.

We have arranged for a Buffet Lunch to be served at the Refectory in the Graduate Building at the end of the tour.

     Cost is $38 per person.

What does the Navy do in Sydney Harbour?

The Club has arranged for 50 places on a cruise of the Western Sydney Harbour conducted by the Naval Historical Society on Friday 28th March

We will meet at the Wharf 3 of the King Street Wharf, Lime Street at 9.45am and board the magnificent MV Bennelong  at 10.00am for a 3 hour voyage around  the past and present Naval establishments on the Western side of the Harbour Bridge. An expert commentary and visuals on the Naval history of each site is provided by ex-RAN personnel plus a full morning tea.

Sights include Cockatoo Island, where 69 warships were built or repaired during WW2, and  Spectacle Island, the site of the Sea Cadet Company which provided basic training for Naval service and an Armament Depot which held 1000 tons of high explosive ammunition for resupply in the Pacific during WW2. In addition, we will learn something of the customs and traditions of the Royal Australian Navy.

Numbers are limited, and a waitlist will be in operation. Lunch afterwards is at Member's own expense with many options available around Darling Harbour.

Parking is tight around the Barangaroo area and public transport (train or Ferry) is recommended.

Cost is $85.00 per person including the morning tea!
