The Hidden History Beneath Sydney
This is a two-hour walking tour through Sydney's iconic City Circle stations. Embarking and disembarking, you will be taken through the stations uncovering their many present-day and hiddenstories, including ghost platforms, wartime secrets and visionary transport plans.
NOTE: contrary to earlier information the tour will end at Town Hall Station and we will proceed to lunch from there. See below.
The tour begins at Central Station, continuing through Museum, St. James, Circular Quay, Wynyard and Town Hall stations. It focuses on more than a century of history since John Bradfield, the visionary chief engineer for Metropolitan Railway Construction and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, decided to extend the line from Central through the city – first to Museum and St James (1926), then to Town Hall and Wynyard (1932) and finally Circular Quay (1956).
We will be guided by Marc Cote, who runs this tour regularly, and who will take us through the histories of the stations, and the varied and often surprising events that have taken place.
We will meet at 9.45am at Platform 1 Central Station. The tour is entirely undercover. The tour starts at 10.00. I will ask you whether you are planning to stay on for lunch.
The tour involves embarking and disembarking on the trains, and there is a significant amount of walking with limited opportunity for sitting. There are a few short flights of stairs.
Bring your Opal card (or credit card) to gain access to the stations.
The tour ends at Town Hall Station. For lunch, we will meet at the Eternity Cafe, which is located in Town Hall Square just outside the station precinct. To reach the cafe, we will exit the station at Exit 5. The booking is for 12.15. Lunch is at member's expense.
